Summer with pets is the best. No one else is as good at reminding us to get outside and smell the flowers. But sometimes cats’ and dogs’ love of nature can lead to funny behaviors, like grazing on grass. With the right fun and safe activities, you can help your pet beat boredom and the occasional urge to snack on the lawn. We hope your pet will give these activities two paws up!
1. MAKE YOUR BACKYARD A WATERPARK!
Create a DIY sprinkler in your yard and let your dog go nuts! Invite friends over and make it a party.
2. HELP YOUR CAT GET OUTSIDE THE SAFE WAY
It’s not just dogs that get to have fun outside in the summer. Cats can experience the outdoors too, from a safe space like a sun porch or by walking with you on a leash. To get started, watch this video for safety tips, and then read our tutorial here.
3. TREAT YOUR DOG TO A COOL SNACK
Heat can bring even the happiest dog down. That’s why it’s important for pet owners to find ways to cool their dogs down on hot days. Ice cubes are a great treat for cooling off, or try Frosty Paws®for a cool treat fortified with protein, vitamins and minerals with no added sugar, artificial flavors or colors.
4. MAKE YOUR PET A THRONE THAT BEATS THE HEAT
Even inside, temperatures can get hot for pets! Cool your cat or dog off in style by making her a cooling throne. Just grab a box about the size of your pet, an ice pack, a sock and a towel. Place the cooling pad in the sock under the towel, and you’re ready to go. Decorate the box with whatever art supplies you have on hand. Voila!
5. PLAY HIDE AND SEEK IN THE COOL OF YOUR HOME
This game is fun for dogs and cats alike! Start by picking an object to hide – for dogs, try treats, like Waggin’ Train Chicken Jerky Curls — for cats, a toy filled with catnip. Let your pet sniff whatever you choose, then hide it in increasingly difficult places for your pet to find. They’ll love getting to investigate the coolest spots in your home.
WHY DO PETS EAT GRASS?
It strikes many pet owners as odd to see their dogs or cats making like cows and grazing on grass. In fact, nibbling on the lawn isn’t uncommon for pets, and it may serve a purpose.
If your pet continues to eat grass, consult your veterinarian. You may need to choose a different food, or consider purchasing a wheat or oat grass kit. We’d recommend providing a grass plant indoors for your pet instead of letting them graze, since many people treat their lawns with pesticides or herbicides. You definitely don’t want your pet grazing on those!

COMMENTS FROM LOVINMYPUP.COM:
This is a great article on suggestions related to fun in the sun for your pets. It contains suggestions for both dogs and cats. We have actually used the “waterpark” suggestion with Bella. We had an inexpensive water hose with holes in it (similar to a child’s toy). and hooked it up to the outside faucet. It took a few minutes of Bella checking out this strange device, but once she tried it she loved it. With spring just around the corner, these ideas will provide hours of fun in the sun for both you and your pets. So enjoy!
