Welcome to Puplifting Moments, where we bring you our favorite stories about people making life better for pups – and pups making life better for people. This week, we’re writing about a program – Anneke’s Haven – which helps keep homeless people and their pets together.

Dogs don’t care how much money their owners have – or don’t have, as the case may be. Their love is unconditional. And yet, it’s all too common to hear someone disparage homeless people who have pets, as though they’re less capable of giving love and care to their animal companions.

The reality is that homeless people often go to incredible lengths to make sure that their dogs are happy and well-fed, even forgoing meals and shelter for themselves. Most homeless shelters don’t allow pets, which can prolong a homeless person’s time on the streets. That’s how valuable an animal’s love is to them.

That’s where Anneke’s Haven comes in. Created as a service through Loaves & Fishes – a homeless program in Sacramento – Anneke’s Haven is a daytime kennel where homeless people can drop off their pets while they look for jobs, take a shower, get a hot meal or mental health services, etc., all the while knowing that their pets are safe and sound with access to food and water.

There are some rules, of course – to use the kennel, all animals must be spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. In many towns across the country, paying for these things would be next-to-impossible for homeless people. But in Sacramento, the homeless can use the free monthly services of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine at Mercer Clinic near Loaves & Fishes.

If you appreciate what Anneke’s Haven is doing as much as we do, consider contributing to their cause by going to the Loaves & Fishes donation page. Also, make sure to follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

This is an amazing article on an amazing organization.   Homeless people are in every state of our union.   While I cannot relate to being homeless, I can certainly relate to the love and companionship of a special pet.   I  have to assume that those homeless pet owners would go to any length to protect their pets.

This Sacramento California program should be copied all over the country.  The homeless and their pets will benefit greatly!  It is an amazing program.

I am looking into restarting the program of featuring your  pets on line.  I am not sure whether it will be this site or on a seperate blog site.   More information will follow as decisions are made,  Keep coming back for more information and future updates.
