Pick Your Dog’s Chew Toy Based on What Kind of Dog You Have

Every dog is unique, and they all enjoy their chew toys differently. When it comes to chewing, which category does your dog fall into?

  • INHALER: Bites off large chunks of edible chews and swallows them fast—a.k.a. “The Gulper”
  • DESTROYER: Tries to thoroughly destroy and make “quick work” out of whatever they get in their mouth (they may or may not swallow what they destroy)
  • SAVORER: A lover, not a fighter. Takes their time and savors their chews and toys slowly. Gives them the respect and attention they deserve.

The most important thing you should do when introducing your dog to a new chew toy is to closely monitor their activity with it. Unfortunately no chew toy is 100% safe, but if you’ve figured out which “personality” type your dog is then you can eventually feel more comfortable leaving them alone with their favorite chews and toys. Here are some more-likely-to-be-safe choices to consider for each “type” of dog.

For INHALERS:
Rubber (firm) chew toys
Tennis balls
Rope chew toys
Stuffed toys

For DESTROYERS:
Rawhides & pigs ears
Edible chews & treats
Bully sticks
Rubber (firm) chew toys

For SAVORERS:
(all types of chews are likely to be OK… lucky you!!)
Rawhides & pigs ears
Edible chews & treats
Bully sticks
Rubber chew toys
Tennis balls
Rope chew toys
Stuffed toys

WARNING: Sticks are not classic chew toys but you should NEVER let your dog use them as a chew or fetch toy! Bones, deer antlers, and nylon chews are also not good choices, as they’re all harder than a dog’s teeth and can (and do) therefore result in painful and expensive broken teeth.

For more detail on many of the chew toy options you’ll find in the pet store, check out our article, Choosing the Best Chew Toy for Your Dog. It outlines which toys are too hard, which have coatings that can cause digestive upset, which wear down teeth, and more.

What to consider when choosing chew toys:

  • Hardness: Not hard enough to break your dog’s teeth. Thumbnail test = if the toy doesn’t have a little bit of “give” when you press on it with your thumbnail, then it’s too hard for your dog.
  • Softness & Durability: Not too soft or poorly-constructed that your dog will be able to chew it apart and potentially swallow pieces, chunks, or the stuffing inside.
  • Coating: Not coated or treated with flavorings that can cause digestive upset.
  • Size & Shape: Not of a size or shape that your dog could choke on it or get their tongue or muzzle stuck in it.
  • Washability: Able to be put in the dishwasher or washing machine & clothes dryer to be periodically cleaned and disinfected.
  • Entertainment Value: Able to provide hours of chewing entertainment and distraction (either because of the toy’s longevity, your dog’s interest in it, or your ability to “stuff” the toy with treats or food)

Hopefully this gives you some more insight into what to get your awesome pooch for the holidays. Dogs love receiving gifts, too, but apparently the gift for these two master unwrappers wasn’t exciting enough…

Have a great week!

COMMENTS FROM LOVINMYPUP:

I LAUGHED WHEN I READ THIS ARTICLE.   MY SERVICE DOG , BELLA, IS A COMBINATION OF DESTROYER AND GULPER!    IN OTHER WORDS,  THERE IS NO  TOY ON THIS EARTH THAT SHE CAN’T SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGE WITHIN TEN MINUTES!    WHILE BELLA WAS IN TRAINING, I ASKED THE TRAINER IF SHE KNEW  OF A NON DESTRUCTIBLE TOY THAT I CAN PURCHASE FOR HER.     SHE GAVE ME THE INFORMATION AND I SPECIAL ORDERED THEIR STRONGEST TOY.    IT TOOK 10 MINUTES FOR BELLA TO TEAR OFF THE HEAD OF THE VERY STURDY SQUIRREL.       THE ONLY TOYS THAT HAVE SEMI LIVED THROUGH THE JAWS OF MY SERVICE DOG ARE MADE OF HEAVY RUBBER.   BUT THEY DON’T GO COMPLETELY UNSCATHED –   THEY LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE A CASE OF CHICKEN POX.  SMALL HOLES FROM THE POINTS OF HER TEETH ARE ALL OVER THE SURFACE.  I CHUCKLE WHEN I LOOK AT THOSE SPOTS.   I CAN HEAR THE EXPERT SAY,     “NO DOG CAN RUIN THESE TOYS”.     SO BELLA ONLY GETS TOYS MADE OF HEAVY RUBBER.    I HOPE YOUR PET RECEIVED A BUNCH OF APPROPRIATE TOYS FOR THE HOLIDAYS.    CHECK OUT THE LINKS TO PET SUPPLIES BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE SITE.

DON’T FORGET TO SHARE YOUR LOVE WITH YOUR PETS.   THEY ARE TRULY A IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR FAMILY.
